Evan has become obsessed with collecting coins here in Chile. It all started when he found a rare one peso on the ground one day. Since then he has collected almost the equivalent of $11 dollars in coins. Many of them he has found and many more he has received as gifts because he talks to everyone about coins and they go and give him some of theirs. Evan will say, "I got this coin because of my cuteness" meaning that he was able to charm people into giving him coins because he is so cute. Well, it is true. To help him organize his collection, he had a collection of wallets for the different types of coins he has. One is for old coins, one is for Argentina coins, one for US coins. You get the idea. For Christmas, he received this "man purse" to put all those wallets in.
Dave took Evan out to the Feria de Pulgas last Saturday in search of rare coins. Evan was so thrilled to get to spend time with his two favorite things, coins and his dad. The feria here is basically a swap meet where people can rent spaces on the pavement to sell their various wares. We found a couple of venders selling coins that day.
This man was selling his coins for $200 pesos a piece which works out to a little under 50 cents.
Evan bought a couple and Dad bought a few as well.

Because of inflation, at times Chile has basically started over with their currency. They no longer use centicimos and centavos and other coins like that. The peso used to be our equivalent of a dollar but has diminished in value so much that now, one pesos is worth about 2 cents. It was fun for Dave and Evan to come across some old coins that are no longer used in circulation here in Chile.
Now, that Evan knows about this place, we have a feeling that he is going to ask to come back here many times.
