We visited the town of Coquimbo which is the city opposite on the bay where we live in La Serena. Coquimbo is famous for the stories of the pirates that attacked the region during the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. This fort was rebuilt but is a replica of the one used to scout the seas for pirates. A local legend goes that the English privateer Francis Drake left an important treasure somewhere at La Herradura Beach in Coquimbo.
The fort at coquimbo free to visit. We had a great time looking around at the fort and climbing the lookout towers and enjoying the view off the shore. There is a great view off the shore of a rock that the sea lions use to sun themselves.
The boys had fun climbing on the rotating cannon at the fort.A 150-pound cannon was settled in this spot in 1876. It was aimed at strengthening the defense, especially at Port Coquimbo.
The sky shows typical winter weather for this time of year. It has actually been much colder than in past winters this year. Most winter days have a hazy overcast sky that may burn off for a couple of hours in the afternoon. The locals say that spring is just around the corner. We are looking forward to that. Although we have aclimitized a bit, it was a bit of a shock going from the high nineties to the 50's.
Here the boys are on the main lookout tower. There is a room underneath that was locked. The rocks they used to build don't really look like the ones on the mountain behind, but are a beautiful combination of browns and tans and greens.
