Bread and Breakfast

We are learning to like the foods in Chile.  The regular loaves of bread cost about $4 a loaf and isn't really that special.  But, they do have this kind of bread that we have found to be quite delightful.  It is called Hallulla pronounce (u-you-ya).  If a store only sells a couple of types of brea, this is one of them.  It has a crust and a soft center but is really the best on the first day.

The hallulla bread formerly known as the pokey bread (or so we called it before we knew the real name) is very inexpensive.  It costs around 900 pesos a kilogram which means that we can get a dozen of them for about a dollar.

I took the day old Hallulla bread and made french toast with it this morning.  It turned of pretty nice.  No maple syrup here.  We had it with palm syrup which comes from, you guessed it, palm trees.  It was sweet and nice and different.  Not all the kids went for it, but it was fun to try.  Also pictured above are the boxed milks that we have been buying.  They are set out in big crates in the middle of the aisle unrefrigerated.  So far the while Soprole skim and the Colun chocolate are our favorites.
