Here we go! On our way to Chile. The kids were so excited for their first plane ride. (Emily and Andrew had been when they were babies.) We took off from LAX and went to Houston then on to Buenos Aires and finally our last flight to Santiago. Evan said that he thought the plane ride would be more exciting and proceeded to fall asleep. On our 10 hour leg to Buenos Aires he watched "Enchanted" and then curled up in a ball and didn't wake up until we were 30 minutes from landing. The rest of us weren't quite so lucky as far as sleep, but overall the plane rides went as well as we could've hoped.
When we arrived in Santiago, we still had a 5 hour drive to our final destination of La Serena. By the time we made it to our new home, we had been traveling for 38 hours. We were exhausted but very excited to have made it. We were so pleased to see how cute our house is. The owners went to great lengths to make sure that we had everything we needed including buying new sheets and cookware and even putting fresh flowers in the entry way. Day two, we took the bus that comes right outside our house to explore downtown. The public transportation here is well established but can get a bit expensive when we are taking six people around. We will be looking into getting a rental car this week.

Here we are checking out downtown Saturday afternoon. It is a beautiful city. We found the people to be very kind and helpful.
Chile uses avocados in just about everything. We had to try this place called Doggis. The hot dog (not very tasty) was covered with tomatoes then avocados and then a cheese sauce. We were glad to have tried them, the avocados were great, but we probably won't be back.

So, we've done a bit of shopping. We are learning what we like and what we can cook with. We saw people loading up bags with this flat bread that has pokes in it. We call it pokey bread. It is very tasty. We have been eating it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were disappointed to find out that they have no fresh milk, only unrefrigerated boxed and powdered milk. We have been sampling the boxed milk and found one that we like it is Leche Sin Cremosa which is basically skim milk. It tastes almost like what we are used to and if you add a little Nesquick, you can hardly tell the difference.
This is our super cute house. It has 3 bedrooms and is probably about 1100 square feet. It is entirely constructed of cement, so we have encouraged the kids not to bang their heads on the walls. This kitchen is small but adequate. There is no dishwasher so we are relearning how to wash and dry dishes by hand. It has a washer for clothes and lots of clothes line in the back for drying. We have a cable/internet package that will allow us to keep up on emails and blogs. Cable has been fun. The kids have already watched Bolt, Star Wars episode 1, and Harry Potter Goblet of Fire all in Spanish.

Jill...I haven't checked blogs for months. I had no idea you were in Chile. I just checked out your facebook page and figured out why you are there. What an amazing adventure. It looks like you are having a fabulous time.
